What’s a Passport?

A passport is an easily recognized travel document that identifies you and authorizes travel. You generally need a passport to enter and return to the US from any other countries. The passport itself is a small booklet containing your photo, name, residence in the United States, and plenty of blank pages awaiting stamps; your passport will usually be stamped with an official seal as you enter or leave other countries.

A passport is a travel document that serves as official proof of citizenship and is issued by the government of your country of residence. In the United States, passports are issued by the U.S. Passport Agency. In Canada, passports are issued by Passport Canada.

How long will my U.S. Passport be valid for?

A passport's validity is determined by the applicant's age. For the US, passports issued to adults ages 16 and older are valid for 10 years. Children 15 years of age and under receive passports valid for 5 years.

Do children require Passport?

Yes, all children who travel (alone or with an adult) under the age of 16 (infants included) need their own passport. It increases the protection of children by ensuring that they have a valid travel document with a photo and other identifying information.

Are there specific requirements for my Passport Photo?

Providing acceptable passport photos will also help avoid delays in the processing of your passport application. The Passport Photo must be 2” x 2” in size, taken within the past 6 months, and on a white background. The photo is an essential part of your travel document. A good clear photo facilitates and ensures you can be easily identified as you cross international borders.

I am renewing my passport. Will I get my old passport back?

Yes, the Department of State will return the old, canceled passport with two punch holes in the old passport.

Why do my documents need to be sealed by an Acceptance Agent?

Your documents are sealed so that the Department of State can be sure that no one has tampered with your application. Once the envelope is sealed, do not open it, or you will have to start the entire process over again. 

What is the Letter of Authorization?

What’s a Visa?

Please note that U.S. Citizens also need a visa to enter a number of countries around the world and in many cases the visas must be obtained before leaving the United States. A Visa is a document that allows you to travel to a specific country for a specific period of time. It is generally issued by a country’s Consulate. Without a Visa, you will be prevented from boarding flights to many countries.

How do I get a Visa?

It's important to check what documents are required before planning any international travel so that you are not deported, and your passport is not confiscated. The Consulates or Embassies of various countries are responsible for authorizing Visas. In order to receive your Visa, you will have to provide the appropriate Visa documentation.
